Artist-in Residence arrives at Madison Middle School

Musician Mitch Barrett

Madison Middle School was selected to receive a VSA Kentucky Art Inclusion Award for 2017! VSA is the state non-profit organization dedicated to providing inclusive arts and education programs for children and adults with disabilities. Funding for these awards is granted to VSA Kentucky from the Kentucky Department of Education, Division of Learning Services to assist schools and communities across the state in providing inclusionary arts programming and implementing Universal Design for Learning.

The students in Mrs. Elizabeth Pike’s music classes will become the artists in the areas of music and dramatic storytelling with the help of local artist Mitch Barrett. Barrett will perform various traditional story-songs for the students to introduce them to the way a person’s story can be easily communicated through song. Then the students become actual participants in the song-writing process and story-creation.

“I’d like to give our students an opportunity to not only be up close to a performing musician, but to interact with, ask questions of, and be inspired by a musician a few feet away," Pike said. "We’re giving them the chance to experiment with an undiscovered talent or interest, or at least foster a better appreciation for what it takes to write and perform an original song.”
