7th Grade Visual Art Students are participating in the National Made by Milk 2017 Carton Construction Contest. This year’s theme was sports. Instead of doing traditional sports, the group decided to create a Quidditch stadium inspired by the books and movies of Harry Potter. Quidditch is a magical sport in which the players fly on broomsticks and throw the ball through the hoops while the Seeker is in search of the Golden Snitch. Once the Snitch is caught, the game is over. It was interesting to learn that several colleges and universities have picked up this fictional game and created version for their students to play. Berea College Student Crafts department has also started making Quidditch style brooms that are sold to several of these schools.
The students had to create the sculpture out of milk cartons and were only allowed 20% another material. Foley’s cafeteria staff saved the cartons and washed them for the project. Cartons had to be cut and made into sheets. A base was created by layering sheets of milk cartons. Then the students started to build the towers of the stadium. Each student had a task to complete with the project, whether it was cutting, hot gluing, painting, drawing the characters and/or building. Each day was exciting to see the progress of the sculpture.
The sculpture has been entered into the National contest and the Made by Milk committee will judge each sculpture by usage of materials and how it relates to the theme. There will also be a People’s Choice Online Voting starting November 29th-December 8th. Stay tuned for a reminder of when the voting window opens. www.madebymilk.com
