The financial literacy partnership between Daniel Boone Elementary 2nd grade students and Clark-Moores Middle School students was a mentoring opportunity thanks to a Mike's Kids Education Foundation Grant! The event was specifically planned to occur during Kentucky Saves Week (also America Saves Week and FCCLA Saves Week).
Twenty-seven middle school students received the opportunity for leadership; and to teach younger children principles of literacy, income, and saving to achieve a goal while learning the content themselves. Second graders benefited with literacy activities that pertained to the text, "A Chair for My Mother," such as vocabulary, comprehension and writing opportunities followed by an extension activity, where students learned through engaging in play of Money Bags, a Learning Resources coin value game.
CMMS students prepared in advance by reading the book "How to Turn $100 into $1,000,000: Earn! Save! Invest!" which is a comprehensive guide for kids on the basics of earning, saving, spending, and investing money.
