Waco Elementary wins two state awards for energy projects

Waco Elementary 5th graders and the Waco Green Team partnered with several community organizations this school year to begin efforts to become more energy efficient. The efforts of these students earned them the Kentucky Rookie of the Year and Elementary Project of the Year awards from the National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project. The students are now in contention for national recognition as a national finalist.

The National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project, Bluegrass Project and 4-H have partnered with Waco Elementary to provide resources, content lessons, guest speakers and field trips. Through the collaboration between these community organizations and our students, our 5th graders have begun educating not only themselves, but staff, other grade levels in our building, and outreach/partnership with our district level staff and the community.

Some of the accomplishments Waco 5th graders have made so far is learning about the forms and sources of energy, conducting our first energy audit school-wide, hosting an energy expo, establishment of the Waco Green Team, implementation of a school-wide recycling program, and purchasing devices that use less energy.

Through these student initiated efforts, Waco Elementary has already begun making changes to the lighting, computers, and reduced the amount of waste across the building. These students have laid the ground work for this project to continue to grow year after year for all future students at Waco Elementary.
