Madison County Schools recognized as LMAS district

Madison County Schools is pleased to announce its support for Let’s Move! Active Schools. Let’s Move! Active Schools is a comprehensive program that empowers school champions – physical education teachers, classroom teachers, principals, administrators and parents – to create active environments that enable all students to get moving and reach their full potential. The district was recognized at the Kentucky Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance conference.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), students need at least 60 minutes of daily physical activity. Since youth spend an average of six to seven hours in school each day, the school environment is an ideal place to help students achieve the recommended amounts of physical activity. Studies also show that students who participate in regular physical activity perform better in school.

At the launch of Let’s Move! Active Schools, First Lady Michelle Obama shared, "when kids have early, positive experiences with physical activity, [it] sets them on the course for life, shaping their habits not just when they’re young, but as adults, as well. And once we’ve gotten our kids excited about being active, then we need to give them opportunities to be active every day, throughout the day."

Madison County Schools recognizes the need to provide physical activity opportunities for its students. As one of the first districts in the country to support Let’s Move! Active Schools, Madison County Schools is proud to continue efforts districtwide that focus on each and every child's needs academically and physically.

"Madison County Schools places a strong emphasis on the well-being of our students and staff," said Superintendent Elmer Thomas. "We understand the importance of healthy bodies in order to help our students achieve their potential academically."

Let’s Move! Active Schools supports individual champions at schools to help promote physical activity before, during and after school as well as parent and community involvement. Schools can sign up at www.letsmoveschools.org, to help them build a team, make a plan, and access free resources and tools, including in-person trainings, program materials and activation grants, and direct, personal assistance from certified professionals.

Let’s Move! Active Schools is a program that supports schools in an effort to create active environments that engage students in movement everyday. The Alliance for a Healthier Generation, the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (AAHPERD), and the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition (PCFSN) serve as the managing partners of the program and work closely with organizations across sectors to support the program. Let’s Move! Active Schools provides simple steps and tools to help schools promote and encourage physical activity before, during, and after the school day. Participating schools receive priority for physical education and physical activity grants associated with the program, customized technical assistance and professional development. Any school in the United States can enroll and receive assistance and support, at no cost. Find out more at www.letsmoveschools.org
