A group of teachers and staff at Kingston Elementary recently completed a 6-week “Fuel Up to Fitness” challenge. The participants each put $10 into the “pot” which was won by the person losing the biggest percentage of body weight. As part of the challenge, each participant committed to 2 exercise classes a week – one led by Onieta Stewart of the Richmond Athletic Club and one by certified personal trainer Tonya Pisula. All classes were held at Kingston after school in the Fitness Lab or gym. Participants completed Kettlebell Amp’d classes, Zumba, and HIIT (high intensity interval training).
The 6-week challenge (which stretched to 8 weeks because of the snow days) included a weekly newsletter for the entire faculty, which highlighted current information on health, nutrition and exercise. Classes were attended by many members of the faculty, but 7 completed the challenge losing a total of 44.4 pounds or a cumulative body weight reduction of 24.55 percent. The group collectively lost 10.7 inches off the waist. The grand prize winner was preschool teacher Sarah Morman, though all the participants “won” with improved fitness and overall well-being. A second challenge began March 11 and will continue for 6 weeks. Faculty member and personal trainer Tonya Pisula will be leading all exercise classes for this second round challenge.
