During Red Ribbon Week, Mayfield Elementary students discussed the dangers of alcohol and drugs. We had several guest speakers that included Trooper Blanton of the KY State Police, Major Mike Unger of the KY National Guard, Major Terry Corder also of the KY National Guard, and Jennifer Webb. Our speakers discussed how difficult it is to do anything under the influence of alcohol and drugs. They explained how if a body is under the influence of alcohol or drugs, then the brain does not work the way it should, and people could hurt themselves and others. The students participated in activities that showed these effects. Students had to ride a tricycle, play basketball, and walk a straight line using “crazy goggles”. These goggles made it very difficult for the students to accomplish any of these feats. They quickly realized that using alcohol and drugs is the wrong choice.
