Cross Grade Level Collaborative Learning at Waco

What happens when you combine 2nd graders who have been comparing non-fiction and fiction stories related to owls and 5th graders who have been learning how to research a topic and create informational  pieces? A great collaborative learning experience for all! On October 29 at Waco Elementary, 2nd grade students joined 5th grade students in a collaborative learning experience about owls.

Students worked together dissecting owl pellets for identification and classification of bones found in the pellets.   Students learned how ecologists utilize gathering data from owl pellets to understand different species population and resources available to support them in their natural habitat.  Culminating activity included tallying collected data at both grade levels.  2nd graders are now creating Owl Fact Books with their new knowledge and 5th grade will culminate this week’s learning by writing poetry and informational pieces.
