Foley Middle School’s Sculpture Club has entered the Made by Milk Sculpture Contest.  The contest encourages students to build strong bones with milk and flex their creative muscles by repurposing milk cartons.  The theme for this year was Inventions.  From the wheel to the smartphone, students were encouraged to look at industry, travel, science, education, technology, medicine and entertainment, even futuristic inventions.

Sculpture Club met and discussed many of these, even looking at some of Leonardo da Vinci’s inventions.  However, it was the possibility of using a futuristic invention that interested the students.  Discussions of gizmos and gadgets for this or that were all clever.  They finally agreed to create a time machine to go back to the past or future.

Foley Middle School 7th grade Visual Art students were invited to participate with the Richmond’s Lions Club A Celebration of Peace poster contest.  This is the 29th year of the Lions Club International Peace Poster Contest.

Students were to follow the theme of celebrating peace and to use images that would explain the content to the viewer.  To prepare for the poster designs, students researched symbols of peace, for example, a dove or a peace sign.  They looked at international flags and images from around the world.  Discussions came up about world peace and what they could do to contribute to peace in their own society.  Rough drafts were drawn up to look at the composition and selection of images to be used.  The students were very supportive of each other’s works.
