Missy Jenkins, Guest Speaker

Foley Middle School is excited to announce that on Friday, October 24th, Missy Jenkins Smith will visit to share her inspirational story of hope, one that will surely resonate with students.

Missy, now 32 years old, was paralyzed from the chest down in the 1997 shooting at Heath High School in Paducah. Despite her disability, Missy returned to graduate from Heath, earned a degree in social work from Murray State University, worked for ten years as a day treatment counselor, married her college sweetheart, had two children and wrote her award-winning memoir I Choose to be Happy: A School Shooting Survivor’s Triumph over Tragedy.

As part of her visit, Missy will be offering her book to Foley Middle School students, staff and parents after her talk for $15 (cash, check or credit). Missy will also be happy to personally sign each copy. The book was updated this summer and now includes chapter questions to prompt discussions on important topics such as bullying, empathy, forgiveness, setting goals and overcoming obstacles.
