FMS Special Election: SBDM Council Minority Parent Election
What is a school council?
The council is the governing body of the school. It works with the principal to help determine school policies and other matters concerning student achievement.
Why the “special election?”
If a school has 8% or more minority enrollment, the school must have minority representation on the school council. FMS currently has a minority enrollment well over that, so we need a minority parent representative on council (a minority representative was not elected after the first round of voting).
The law defines minority as “American Indian; Alaskan native; African American; Pacific Islander; Hispanic, including persons of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, and & Central or South American origin; or other ethic group underrepresented in the school.”
Who may run for this position?
A parent SBDM council member shall be a biological parent, stepparent, foster parent, or legal guardian of a student attending the school during the council member’s term of office. A parent is ineligible if he/she is an employee or a relative of an employee (father, mother, brother, sister, husband, wife, son, daughter, aunt, uncle, son-in-law, daughter-in-law) of that school or of the district central office. They cannot be a local school board member, the spouse of a school board member, or have a business interest in the school.
