Music Programs

Each MKA team presents a music program.

The Firefly team did a Nursery Rhyme Program.  All the students in the school learned "Twinkle", "Itsy Bitsy Spider", "Wee Willie Winkie", "Baa Baa Black Sheep", "Five Little Ducks" and the "Family Finger Song".  All students learned to play the steady beat on triangles and rhythm sticks, and play simple patterns on the metallophones and xylophones.  Hand choreography was added by Mrs. Brooks' class and a dance by Mrs. Fichetola's class.  The entire school sang in English, Indian, Chines and Arabic in the "Family Finger Song".

The Caterpillar team just finished a Veterans' Day Program.  All students in the school learned the "Star Spangled Banner", "The Pledge of Allegiance", "Yankee Doodle", "Thank You For All You Do", "Battle Hymn" and "This Land is Your Land".  Faculty, staff and students brought photos of family veterans for a moving MKA Veteran power point. A trumpet student from EKU played "Taps" while the students performed a silent choreography. Students performed on wood blocks, sand blocks, tambourines and crash cymbals, marched in place and performed American Sign Language.

The Chameleon team presented a Holidays Music Program in December.  All students in the school learned a welcoming Cherokee song representing Thanksgiving.  The Chameleons presented this song with singers, dancers and instrumentalists on Native American drums, scrappers and rattles.  Students learned "Dreydl" for Hanukkah, "Kumbayah" for Kwanzaa, "Up on a Housetop"  and "Silent Night" for Christmas and even "Feliz Navidad" in Spanish.  Students learned steady beat on Native American and Hispanic percussion instruments and melodic and harmonic ostinato patterns on xylophones and glockenspiels.  The program ended with a sing-along medley of Christmas songs:  "Go Tell it on the Mountain", "O Christmas Tree/O Tannebaum", "Deck the Halls", "Jingle Bells" and "We Wish You a Merry Christmas"!

The Seahorse team is selecting songs for their music program, "Math the Musical" planned for early March.

Music Matters

How does sound work?

Students learned about sound waves and vibrations.  They felt their vocal cords vibrating in their necks and heard sound waves through toobaloos.  Students learned that all sounds, music and noise, are vibrations that are sound waves that travel through the air, are picked up by our ears and made meaningful by our brains. Students successfully predicted that a pebble would move when they played that gathering drum!

The Science of Sound!
