You will be reading Pink and Say and completing various activities throughout this independent center. You will use the following website to work through the activities: http://stancock.iweb.bsu.edu/CyberLessons/pinksay/cyberlesson.html
Before you begin reading, you need to complete a KWLS chart. I have given you the chart to fill out. Go to the website above and read through "Before You Read" number 1. After you have finished the chart, make sure to turn it in to me. Then you may explore the two websites provided about the Civil War.
Again, before reading, fill out the prediction chart. Think about the setting (place & time), characters, a major event, the main problem, and the resolution. Make at least one prediction per section. When you have finished, please turn it in to me.
You will get back your KWLS chart today as you begin reading the story. Fill out the things you are learning in the "L" column. On the back of this page, list any words that are you new to you. There are also nine vocabulary words on the website that I want you to write down. You may use the two links in order to define these words (including the ones that you write down)! Try to read the first third of the story.
We have looked at plot throughout the this entire school year. Before you begin reading for today, list the events that you've read about so far. You can do this in your reader's notebook. As you continue to read today, continue to list any events that you think make the story. work. We will put these together in a story pie later in the week. Remember to continue listing what you have learned in the "L" column and listing and looking up any confusing words today. Try to read through the second third of the book today.
We will finish the story together today, as we continue to add words and events to our two lists. When we finish, we will define unknown words and put together our plot activity, story pie.
Now that we have finished the story, you are going to imagine you are Say and write a letter to your mother from the prison camp after you have been separated from Pink. You may use your KWLS chart or story pie in order to tell her about everything you have been through. Remember to use our friendly letter format and write in paragraphs! There are a couple of links on the webpage for you to use as examples.
Today you will take a quiz on the story. Click here in order to begin, Make sure you to show me your score before you close out of it.
If you would like some extra credit in reading class, read through #2 in After you Read. Use your good writer's skills to write out an interview of Pink OR Say with a Civil War reporter.
