Course Description

This course is the introduction to the construction carpentry industry. The class will emphasize the safe and proper methods of operating hand tools, portable power tools, and stationary power tools in the construction industry.

Textbooks : NCCER Trainee Guide – Core Curriculum

                     NCCER Trainee Guide – Carpentry Level One

 

Content/Process

Identify the proper use of personal protection equipment and general job safety.

Identify and use various types of building materials.

Identify and use various types of fasteners, anchors, and adhesives used in the construction industry.

Identify the actual and nominal sizes of lumber.

Demonstrate the safe and proper use of the following types of hand tools: fastening devices, layout and

 measuring devices, leveling devices, edge and cutting devices.

Demonstrate the safe and proper use of the following types of portable power tools: various saws, surfacing and

 shaping tools, drills, pneumatic tools, etc.

Demonstrate the safe and proper use of the following stationary power tools: various saws, drill press, surface and shaping tools, drills, pneumatic tools, etc,

 

Grading Scale – Same as high school

 

Procedures for Makeup Work/Tests

A student will be permitted to make up tests and work not completed provided the student has an excused absence for missing the assignments. Excused absences must be must be approved by the high school.

 

Attendance Policy/Withdrawal Policy

There is a lot of information to be presented. Students are expected to attend and be punctual. In the event a student misses all or part of a class he or she will be expected to make up missed assignments. Withdrawals from the class will be handled by your home high school.

 

Supplies

  1. Always have a pencil. Tests and assignments will be given. Be prepared.
  2. A student enrolled in this class will be expected to participate in all class activities and to wear proper clothing and safety equipment. (safety glasses, hard hats and tool belts are provided)

            3.   All other hand tools, power tools and woodworking equipment will be furnished by the school.

Class expectations/Rules

  1. Wear proper clothing and safety equipment, no open toed shoes.
  2. Obey all safety rules and regulations.
  3. Obey all high school rules and policies.
  4. No horseplay.
  5. Be sure the classroom and shop are clean and all tools are put away before leaving.
  6. No profanity
  7. Keep safety glasses on while in the lab and wear them properly.
  8. Cell phones and electronic devices are not to be seen or used without permission.
