Word Study

During Word Study, the students become word detectives as they investigate  letter/sound relationships and word skills. Each week we have a new skill we investigate.  Students are given a pretest to determine their understanding of the new skills and are then given their word list for the week.  This differentiation is perfect to challenge and reach every learner and provide them with opportunities to excel at their own level.  While students will have 10 assigned words that follow the spelling pattern that we are studying each week, they will also have 5 high frequency words that they will be expected to practice spelling at home.  After being given a spelling assessment at the beginning of the school year, all students will have different high frequency words that they will be asked to study each week based on which of the first 100 high frequency words they knew (or did not yet know) how to spell on the initial assessment.  Your child will have a spelling test each Friday that contains 25 words.  Twenty of the words will be pattern-based and, and the remaining 5 will be high frequency words that are individually chosen for your child.  A word study packet will also be given to your child each week with assignments that should be completed at home and returned to school before the weekly spelling test is given.
