Congressman Ben Chandler entered Madison Middle School’s auditorium to a loud applause from 500 excited students and staff, on the morning of Thursday, February 23. Congressman Chandler took time out of his busy schedule to talk with Madison Middle School and to answer some insightful questions from students. Topics ranged from local level issues and initiatives to the impact of NCLB on our schools. Starting his talk with the students about his role in government, Chandler offered an explanation of the different branches of government and began a discussion about issues of concern to the citizens of Kentucky. Congressman Chandler went on to tell the students that education plays a large role in rebuilding America and putting people back to work “The American people’s top priority is job creation, and strengthening small businesses, rebuilding America and putting people back to work is a crucial part of growing our economy.”
He encouraged students to work hard and get a strong education so that they can reach their dreams. “Work hard in school and dream big, and if you don’t make it the first time, it’s ok. You learn more about yourself from not making it, and you take what you learned and try again.” When asked about some local issues, Congressman Chandler said he supports gambling in Kentucky because it will keep the money in Kentucky to build roads and support schools. Madison Middle’s students learned a great deal of information about government, as well as state and local issues during Congressman Chandler’s visit.
