Unit 5- Fractions!  In this section, students will be expected to name and draw various fractions from a real world situation, as well as compare, convert, simplify, add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions.  In class, students will be encouraged to find a method to working with fractions that they are comfortable with.  These methods include the traditional mathematical method, drawing pictures, or using a slide ruler.  We will look at each way and it is up to your child to find the best way.

Critical Vocabulary:

  • numerator (top number in a fraction)
  • denominator (bottom number in a fraction)
  • proper fraction (fraction in which the numerator is less than the denominator)
  • equivalent fractions (fractions of equal value)
  • unit fraction (the equal parts that make up a whole- any fraction with a numerators of 1)
  • whole (the part that represents one or the unit)
  • LCM (Least Common Multiple)
  • GCF (Greatest Common Factor)
  • improper fraction (fraction in which the numerator is greater than the denominator)
  • mixed number (a whole number and a fraction)
  • fraction stick / slide (number line with fractions used to add and subtract)
