Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving! We hope everyone enjoys the holiday break. There is no school Wednesday through Friday -- Nov. 25 through 27. Classes will resume Monday, Nov. 30. Enjoy this festive time!

Voting Begins Today for Made by Milk Contest

The Made by Milk contest encourages students to build strong bones with milk and flex their creative muscles by repurposing milk cartons. Students from Foley Middle School's Sculpture Club have spent the last eight weeks after school working toward entering this nationwide contest.

My School: Silver Creek Elementary

Exciting things are happening in music education at Silver Creek Elementary! After a hiatus of a few years, the Bobcat Choir is back in action! In addition, we have started a brand new Violin Club at Silver Creek! Both groups are open to all fourth and fifth grade students.

My School: Kit Carson Elementary

Fifth grade students at Kit Carson Elementary School recently honored local veterans at our annual Veterans Day program. To prepare, students practiced singing patriotic songs in music, prepared to deliver speeches in language arts class, decorated stars in art and social studies, and wrote cards of thanks to veterans. During the program, students delivered speeches about the history of Veterans Day and sang patriotic songs. One student, Isaiah, accompanied some of the songs on his drum, while KC Handchimes played an Armed Forces Medley and God Bless America.

Honoring Officer Daniel Ellis Wednesday, Nov. 11

Funeral arrangements have been made for Officer Daniel Ellis. Visitation will be Tuesday, Nov. 10, from 2 to 8 pm. at Alumni Coliseum on the EKU Campus. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, also at Alumni Coliseum.


In an effort to honor our fallen hero, Madison County Schools will be closed on Wednesday, Nov. 11.

Support the Ellis Family

Many people in our community are asking for ways to support the Ellis Family during this difficult time. Fundraisers and other opportunities are popping up across the community. My School: Kirksville Elementary

Kirksville Elementary School celebrated “Unity Day” on Oct. 22 as the culminating activity to Bullying Prevention Month. Students and staff wore orange to show support for students who have been bullied and to lead the movement against bullying.

Madison County to Celebrate “EKU Maroon Day”

It is time to paint the town maroon!

In celebration of Eastern Kentucky University’s Homecoming 2015 and as a showing of community support for the University, Richmond Mayor Jim Barnes and Madison County Judge Executive Reagan Taylor are proclaiming Friday, Oct. 23, 2015 as “EKU Maroon Day.”

District partners with MealViewer to provide mobile menus

Madison County Schools Food Service is excited to announce a partnership with MealViewer to provide staff, students, and parents a menu they can view on their phone or any computer. As menus change, the menus will be updated, allowing parents to view the new menu within minutes.

My School: Clark-Moores Middle School

Clark-Moores Middle School is dedicated to improving student achievement and teaching the “whole” student. Our teachers have been attending trainings and learning new strategies through MaRti, Compass Learning Pathways, and Kagan Structures. We implemented a program called STAR (Strategies To Achieve Results) last spring and it was revised for the 2015-16 school year. The program provides intervention for RTI, Learning Labs to raise MAP scores and enrichment classes.  STAR meets 3 days a week for 40 minutes and all staff is involved in delivering instruction.

Fall Break Reminder

My School: Madison Central High School

The new school year is off to a great start at Madison Central!  Students and staff kicked off the new year with an opening day pep rally on the football field in order to welcome students back and create excitement for the new year.

MCS leading area districts on Unbridled Learning Assessment

Madison County Schools is pleased to announce that the district outperformed all seven surrounding county school districts as well as Berea Independent Schools in the 2015 Unbridled Learning Assessments. The district remains designated as a "Proficient" district. Proficient means the district ranks in the 70th percentile or above among all 173 Kentucky districts. MCS increased it ranking from the 87th percentile last year to 89th this year among Kentucky districts.

My School: Shannon Johnson Elementary

Shannon Johnson Elementary kicked off its Watch DOGS (Dads of Great Students) program with a Dads and Kids pizza night on Sept. 15. The kickoff included 136 dads or father figures attending.

My School: Madison Middle

On Tuesday mornings in the Madison Middle library something unique is taking place. Listen closely. You may hear things like, ¿Cómo va la clase de matemáticas? (How is math class going?) or ¿Cuál es tu favorito después de la actividad escolar? (What is your favorite after school activity?). This is all part of a new partnership with the AP Spanish class at Madison Central High School. MMS students, whose native language is Spanish, are meeting each week with members of Paula Adkins’ AP class to improve their conversational English skills and receive mentoring and support from these high school students.

Director of Technology named

Madison County Schools is pleased to announce that Jacob Cecil has been named Director of Technology for the district. Cecil replaces Bob Moore, who accepted a position with Fayette County Schools in July. Cecil has been employed by Madison County Schools since September 2011. Cecil has served the district as assistant technology manager, technology manager, and operating system administrator. He has been serving as interim director of technology since July.

My School: White Hall Elementary

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE are words one would hear many times a day at White Hall Elementary. Members of the Green Club are responsible for making those words important at White Hall Elementary. Green Club members are 4th and 5th graders.

4th annual Tracks for Packs 5K

Registration is open for the 4th annual Tracks for Packs 5K. This year's event is Saturday, Sept. 12, at Richmond Center. Registration begins that morning at 7 a.m. and the race begins at 8 a.m. The Tracks for Packs 5K is an event that raises funds to help support the Madison Backpack Program. Daniel Boone Back to School Night

Reminder:  Daniel Boone Elementary's Back to School Night will be this evening (Thursday, Aug. 13) from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.


Good afternoon! It was a great first day of school for Madison County Schools today! All buses are rolling, but we are running about 45 minutes to an hour behind in some areas of the county. Please be patient as we get everyone home safely this afternoon. See you all tomorrow!

Start of School Update

School will begin as planned on Wednesday, Aug. 12, for ALL Madison County schools OTHER THAN DANIEL BOONE ELEMENTARY. Students attending Daniel Boone Elementary will begin their year on Monday, Aug. 17. This delay for Daniel Boone Elementary will not affect bus routes or the district’s school year calendar. Children living in the Daniel Boone district but attending middle school or Madison Kindergarten Academy will start school on Wednesday, Aug. 12.

Daniel Boone to begin Monday, August 17

Daniel Boone Students will not begin school until Monday, August 17th due to construction. Children living in the Daniel Boone district but attending middle school or Madison Kindergarten Academy will start school on Wednesday, August 12.

On Monday, August 10 and Tuesday, August 11 to Daniel Boone Campus will be closed to only the construction crew. Teachers will be having meetings off campus.

Back-to-School Folders will most likely be able to be picked up at the school on Wednesday (more information will be posted early next week.)

Back to School Night has been rescheduled for Thursday, August 13 from 5:30-7:30...PM at Daniel Boone.

MCHS Musical Theater Department holds auditions for "Annie!"

Madison Central High School's Musical Theater Department is holding open auditions for our Fall Production, "Annie!" Auditions for the roles of Annie and orphans will take place at the Madison Central chorus room located by the auditorium on Monday, August 10, beginning at 3 p.m.

Volunteer Training Schedule available

Parents are encouraged to serve in the schools as volunteers. Volunteering includes anything from helping in the front office, to helping with a school event, to supervising on a field trip. If you are a parent who anticipates volunteering at some point in the school year, you will need to complete Volunteer Confidentiality Training. You can find the schedule for trainings HERE. Principal selections made for Caudill and Madison middle schools

Madison County Schools is pleased to announce the hiring of principals for B. Michael Caudill Middle School and Madison Middle Schools. Che Haselwood will be principal at BMCMS and Amie Gallion will be principal at MMS.

District has 14 schools eligible for CEP

Beginning on the first day of school, Madison County Schools will have 14 schools eligible for the Community Eligibility Program. ALL students at the CEP eligible schools will receive a healthy breakfast and lunch at school at no charge each day of the 2015-2016 school year. Children will be able to participate in these meal programs without having to pay a fee or submit a meal application.

MCS among 44 districts approved for non-traditional instructional days

In the upcoming school year when bad weather hits Kentucky, students in 44 school districts will continue learning even if they aren’t at school. Madison County Schools is among them.

Graduations begin tonight

Congratulations to the Class of 2015 from Madison Central High School and Madison Southern High School! Madison Central's graduation will take place tonight at 7 p.m. Madison Southern's graduation will take place tomorrow at 2 p.m. Both ceremonies will be held at Alumni Coliseum on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University.

Board worksession rescheduled

Monday, June 1, is half day for students

Monday, June 1, 2015, is the final day of classes for students in Madison County Schools. It will be a "half day." Dismissal for the last day of school will be 3 hours prior to regular dismissal time.

DB's Orff Ensemble performs at statewide conference

The Daniel Boone Elementary Orff Ensemble performed at the opening sessions of the Kentucky Association of School Business Officials 2015 Spring Conference in Louisville.

Board of Education hosts first meeting in new district office building

Room of the new district office building tomorrow evening. The meeting, scheduled for 6 p.m., was originally scheduled to take place in the lecture lab at Madison Central High School, but has been moved to the new district office at 301 Highland Park Drive. The new office building opened on Monday, April 27, after renovations were complete. If you are planning to attend the meeting, please park in the rear of the building and enter through the covered back door.

Celebrate School Lunch Hero Day

Today is School Lunch Hero Day! Thank you to all of our employees who work so hard everyday to provide breakfast and lunch for our students and staff! You are certainly heroes to us!

District office closed Thursday and Friday

The district office located at 550 South Keeneland Drive will be closed Thursday and Friday, April 23 and 24. The staff will be relocating to the new district office. The new district office located at 301 Highland Park Drive will be open Monday, April 27. Thank you for your patience during the move.

MCS archers raise $4,500 for charity

Madison Southern High School hosted archers from throughout the county and together they raised $4,500 in the 5th annual Judy Rogers Shoot for the Cure Archery Tournament. More than 350 archers from Kirksville Elementary, Waco Elementary, Glenn Marshall Elementary, White Hall Elementary, Shannon Johnson Elementary, Clark-Moores Middle, Caudill Middle, Farristown Middle, Madison Central High, and Madison Southern High were able to raise the funds that will be donated to St. Jude's Children's Hospital and Hospice Care Plus. In the 5 years of the tournament, students have raised more than $30,000 for these two charities.

Board approves 2015-2016 school year calendar

The Madison County Board of Education approved the district's 2015-2016 school year calendar at its regular meeting April 16. The calendar can be viewed or printed by clicking HERE.

Afternoon update

Please be aware that buses will likely run late because of the high water and flooding issues our county is experiencing. Kit Carson Elementary, Kingston Elementary, Glenn Marshall Elementary, Shannon Johnson Elementary, and Silver Creek Elementary districts are the most affected districts. If you live in these areas, please be patient as we use alternative routes to deliver children safely home. We will post any updates as they are available this afternoon. Thank you for your patience and your cooperation today.

Afternoon preschool canceled

Afternoon preschool has been cancelled for today (Tuesday, April 14). AM preschool students will stay at school until the afternoon release time. Parents are, of course, welcome to pick their AM preschool students up if they choose.

Two-Hour Delay due to power outage

Madison County Schools will operate on a two-hour delay today due to a power outage in Berea. There is no indication as to when the power will be back on. We encourage you to check back for any updates.

Board approves calendar for 2014-2015 end of school

The Madison County Board of Education voted to approve the final calendar for the 2014-2015 school year. The last day of school for students will be Monday, June 1, 2015. Graduation dates were also set by the Board. Madison Central High School graduates will have their ceremony on Friday, May 29. Madison Southern High School graduates will have their ceremony on Saturday, May 30. Both ceremonies will be held at Eastern Kentucky University's Alumni Coliseum. The times for those ceremonies will be announced soon.

Rescheduled events

Please be sure to call ahead or contact a coach or sponsor before traveling to a scheduled event or activitiy as many were rescheduled due to the recent inclement weather.

  • The meeting for 8th grade students and parents invited to discuss the Madison County Advanced Scholars Academy at the Madison Central Auditorium tonight has been cancelled due to inclement weather. The meeting is rescheduled for Tuesday, March 10 at 6 p.m. in the Madison Central auditorium. 

  • Kit Carson Elementary's trip to COSI has been postponed. A rescheduled date in May is likely. More information to come when details are worked out.

Madison County Schools will be closed Friday, March 6.

School will be in session March 20

Madison County Schools will use the previously scheduled March 20 professional development day as a make-up day. To date, the district has cancelled school seven days for inclement weather. Pending Board approval, students last day of classes for the 2014-2015 school year will be Thursday, May 28. Memorial Day (May 25) will remain a holiday.

Public forum to discuss the district facilities plan is scheduled

On behalf of the Madison Board of Education, the Madison County Local Planning Committee will convene its 8th meeting and 3rd public forum to continue development of the District Facilities Plan. The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. local time Monday, March 2, 2015, at the Glenn Marshall Elementary School Media Center. This public forum will be for the purpose of discussing items concerning the District Facilities Plan. The public forum will be followed by a meeting to consider items discussed in the forum and the review of the plan by the Kentucky Department of Education.

Breakfast/lunch menu update

The district's cafeteria managers met this afternoon to iron out the details of the breakfast and lunch menus after this extended winter break. When school resumes, please follow LAST WEEK's breakfast and lunch menus. The food service staff will be trying to stick as closely with those planned meals as possible.

Madison County Schools will be well represented at the state wrestling competition this year. Vote for CMMS student's slogan

Alison Lundergun Grimes’ office informed us that one of our students, Lauryn Robinson at Clark-Moores Middle School, has had her voting slogan chosen in the top 15 of the state. The winner will be chosen by public vote. The public online voting begins today and ends on the February 20 at midnight.

LPC meeting cancelled

The Local Planning Committee meeting scheduled for this evening has been cancelled. It will be rescheduled for a later date.

February Board Meeting Notes

Tony Thomas, architect with Clotfelter-Samokar Architects, presented the preliminary renderings for the renovations at Foley Middle and Silver Creek Elementary schools at Thursday’s regular Board of Education meeting. The renderings are part of the first stages for planning and development for the renovation projects that will begin at Foley and Silver Creek in the fall.

MCS hosts review of wellness report

Madison County Schools will host a time for the public to review the wellness report for the 2014-2015 school year. The review will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, January 22, at the district's central office on South Keeneland Drive. Anyone wishing to look through the district's annual wellness report and ask questions will have the opportunity to do so at that time. Food Service Director Emily Agee and School Nurse Coordinator Becky Carr will be on hand. The report will be posted on the district's website following the review.

Reminder: There will be no school in Madison County Schools on Monday, January 19, 2015, in observance of Martin Luther King Day. Classes will resume Tuesday, January 20. Enjoy the long weekend!

Afternoon preschool canceled

Afternoon preschool has been canceled for today. Morning preschool students at Shannon Johnson Elementary and Silver Creek Elementary will not be bused home at mid-day. They will remain at school until the end of the day unless parents would like to pick them up. All other morning preschool students will be bused homed at regular time.

Bechtel Parsons Blue Grass grant recipients announced

Each year, Bechtel Parsons Blue Grass awards 10 $1,000 grants to Madison County Schools teachers who have innovative ideas in the areas of science, math, and/or technology. This year's grant recipients have been announced and their ideas range from understanding spatial reasoning and engineering rules to building bridges that will withstand earthquakes and even creating virtual lab experiences. Congratulations to these teachers!

Difficulty continues with district phone system

UPDATE:  The phones are back up and running!!! Thanks to MCS Ben Burnett and the technicians at Windstream for working so hard to find and fix the problem.

Math Intervention Teachers Honored with Trailblazer Award

Thirteen Kentucky teachers received the Northern Kentucky University Trailblazer Award for Mathematics Education during a presentation by President Mearns Dec. 4 at the Embassy Suites Lexington. Among them were 5 math interventionists from Madison County Schools.

City of Richmond postpones parade

Based on predictions from the National Weather Service, City and Emergency Management Officials have decided that postponing the Richmond Christmas Parade will be in the best interest of public safety. Due to scheduling conflicts with various community events, the only date available to reschedule this event is December 12th. Barring further inclement weather, we will hold the parade on this date. The line up for the parade will be from 4:30-6:00pm. The parade will leave Alumni Coliseum at 6:45pm and will arrive at Main Street at approximately 7:00pm. We realize that this is an inconvenience for many of our participants and we are doing everything that we can to help make this event a success. Thank you for your patience and understanding in this matter.
