Volunteer Confidentiality Training schedule available

Back to school time also means it is time for parents, grandparents, and other community members to attend volunteer confidentiality training. Any person who is interested in volunteering in a school, chaperoning a class field trip, or helping in any other way will need to complete the mandatory volunteer confidentiality training. If the training is not completed, that person will be unable to volunteer in any way.

World Archery Championships come to Richmond

Caudill Middle School and Madison Central High School have won the World Archery Championships in the middle and high school divisions. The win is a third consecutive title for Caudill Middle School and a first for MCHS. Congratulations to both teams!

Board chooses name for kindergarten academy

The Board of Education voted unanimously to name the kindergarten center the Madison Kindergarten Academy at Mayfield. The mascot will be the Monarchs and the Madison Kindergarten Academy colors will be red, white and blue.

New Chief Operations Officer named

Madison County Schools named Randy Neeley as chief operations officer. Neeley will begin his role on July 1, 2014. Neeley has served Madison County Schools as director of pupil personnel since 2010. Prior to serving as DPP, he served Madison County Schools as principal of White Hall Elementary, assistant principal of Madison Middle, and health teacher at Madison Middle. Neeley’s career in education began in 1994 and he has served his entire career in Madison County Schools.

Dr. Hub Accepts Superintendent Post for Logan County Schools

The Logan County Board of Education announced the selection of Dr. Kevin F. Hub as their next superintendent of schools. Dr. Hub is a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point with a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering and Environmental Geography, Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond with a Masters of Arts in Education degree in Geography Education, and Spalding University in Louisville with a Doctorate in Education in Leadership Education. He is currently serving as Assistant Superintendent and Chief Operating Officer for Madison County Schools and is in his 20th year in education.

Update: Power is being restored at Madison Central with steady progress.

Currently, there is a power outage at much of Madison Central High School. Crews are at the school restoring power. Calendars, graduations approved by the Board

The Board of Education voted tonight to finalize the district’s calendar for the 2013-2014 school year. 10 minutes per day will be added to the day beginning Wednesday, April 23. The last day of school for students will be Friday, May 30. Closing day for employees will be Thursday, June 5. Professional Development days are scheduled for Tuesday, May 20, and Monday, May 26.

The Madison County Technology Extravaganza Showcase will be held Thursday, April 17, at Madison Central High School. Students will showcase their projects from 5 to 6 p.m. and the awards will be from 6 to 8 p.m. in Madison Central's Auditorium. All students receiving this letter will be recognized on stage. The state House and Senate will meet in conference committee to resolve the differences in their proposed "snow day" bills. No time frame has been announced as to when their work might be concluded. Rep. John Will Stacy of West Liberty says he is hoping for a "swift resolution."

School year calendar update

As of Wednesday, March 5, 2014, students have missed fifteen (15) days of school for inclement weather – Dec. 10; Jan. 6, 7, 17, 21, 22, 23, 24; Feb. 3, 6, 10, 26; and March 3, 4, and 5. When the calendar was developed for this school year, administrators “built in” time for four (4) school days. That time has been used and we are now making adjustments to the calendar. Students attended school on Presidents Day (Feb. 17), which was in the original calendar as a holiday. Students will attend school on Friday, March 21, which was in the original calendar as a professional development day. The original last day of classes was scheduled for Friday, May 23. District receives donation for shoes for students in need

Madison County Schools received more than 100 pairs of new shoes and $600 in donations for the purchase of new shoes for middle and high school students in the community from the "Walk in Jimmy's Shoes" shoe drive. The drive was sponsored by Jack Burford Chevrolet and Soft Shoe in Richmond. MCS named to AP District Honor Roll

Madison County Schools is one of 477 public and private districts to be named to the College Board’s 4th annual Advanced Placement (AP) District Honor Roll. The honor roll includes public and private districts throughout the U.S. and Canada that increased access to Advanced Placement courses for a broader number of students while also maintaining or improving the rate at which their AP students earned passing scores of 3 or higher (out of a possible 5) on an AP Exam.

Bechtel Parsons Blue Grass offers innovation grants

Bechtel Parsons Blue Grass is once again offering Madison County teachers the opportunity to apply for Innovation Grants. The grants are intended to recognize and reward teachers who bring innovative approaches to the classroom. The program will be awarding up to 10 $1,000 grants to fund creative classroom activities that promote student-centered learning and enhances education in science, math, and/or technology programs.

The Madison County Board of Education voted 4-1 Thursday evening to approve a plan for implementing all-day kindergarten in the district in the fall of 2014. The Board reviewed three plans submitted by Superintendent Elmer Thomas and approved the option recommended by the superintendent.

Glenn Marshall Elementary wins Pumpkin Run! Shannon Johnson takes home Triple Crown Glenn Marshall Elementary School took home the top prize for participation at the 8th Annual Coordinated School Health Pumpkin Run/Walk for Health. The Mustangs registered 185 participants at this year's event, giving them top prize for a second straight year. Last year, they shared the 1st place spot with Shannon Johnson Elementary. Waco Elementary came in second place with 132 parcticipants and Shannon Johnson Elementary came in third with 109 at the event. This year's Pumpkin Run/Walk for Health had 549 registered participants representing 15 schools. Read More

2013 Unbridled Learning results are in: District designated "Proficient" Madison County Schools is pleased to announce that the district has increased its scores enough to be designated as a "Proficient" district. Proficient means the district ranks in the 70th percentile or above among all 173 Kentucky districts. The district is also pleased to announce that Silver Creek Elementary is listed as a "Distinguished-Progressing" school, which means Silver Creek ranks in the 90th percentile of Kentucky's elementary schools. Principals hired at Madison Central High, Waco Elementary Madison County Schools is pleased to announce the selection of two new principals in the district. The site-based decision making councils at Madison Central High and Waco Elementary schools have completed the hiring process.

Number of students taking AP courses nearly triples in three years

This year, 1,165 students are enrolled in Advanced Placement courses at the county school district’s two high schools, nearly triple the number enrolled in 2010. Chief academic officer David Gilliam reported those figures to the school board at its monthly meeting Sept. 12. AP courses prepare students to take AP exams, which can give students a jump start on earning college credits, he said.

Tax Hearing Scheduled

The Madison County Board of Education will hold a public hearing in the Madison Central High School lecture lab, 705 North Second Street, Richmond, Kentucky on September 9, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. to hear public comments regarding a proposed general fund tax levy of 60.0 cents on real property and 60.0 cents on personal property.  (The Board may add an additional .1 cents to the above property rates to recover prior losses due to exonerations – KRS 134.590.  If added, rates would be 60.1 cents and 60.1 cents, respectively.)

Madison County Schools - through the support of community businesses and partners - hosted the 2nd annual AMPlify MCS opening day event for all full-time staff members on Monday, Aug. 12. The event, which is paid for entire through sponsorships and vendors, bring all full-time staff members of the district together at the Eastern Kentucky University Center for the Arts for a half day of professional development.

Superintendent Elmer Thomas has named David Gilliam the district’s new Chief Academic Officer and Assistant Superintendent. Mr. Gilliam has served the students of Madison County Schools for 21 years, all of them at Madison Southern High School. Mr. Gilliam has served Madison Southern as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, and principal.

The Madison County Schools Transportation Department received an unexpected honor June 25 at the 21st annual Pupil Transportation Conference at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Louisville. The Madison County Schools Training Department, within Madison County Schools Transportation Department, received highest accolades from the Kentucky Department of Education. The “Top Overall Training Department” title was bestowed upon the group.
