School History
White Hall School had it's beginning in 1919 as a subscription school in which a specific sum was paid by the parent for each child's enrollment. It was a one room building on the farm of Mat Dozier located on Boonesborough Road. The school sat back fifty feet from the road. Its two wooden steps led to a door that opened into one small room.
There were not the amenities we know today... not even basic things like a chalk board or indoor plumbing... even heat was a blessed event. The little potbellied stove had three good legs and the fourth was made from bricks placed one on the other. Double desks, a water bucket and dipper completed the furnishings. Water had to be carried from Leslie Long's place located across the road.
In 1920, the Madison County Board of Education embarked on a program of consolidation. Land was purchased from Mr. Dozier and on September 5, 1921, a new White Hall opened with one elementary and one high school teacher. The following January, the school was destroyed by fire. It was rebuilt immediately and reopened in 1923. Gradually students from Science Hill, McCord, Black, Deatherage, and Forest Hill were transferred to White Hall.
In 1939, when Madison Central High School was completed, White Hall became an elementary school containing first through sixth grades. In 1960 the Board of Education began making plans for a new, modern school to be located on US Highway #25. In February, 1963 the Boonesborough Road school was closed and the pupils were moved to the new White Hall Elementary School.
Fire was not the only destruction that White hall School was to face. On April 3, 1974 a tornado hit the building with devastating results. Restoration began immediately and the school managed to open again in September 1974.
The years have brought many changes to White Hall Elementary. In 1974 the eighth grade students were moved to Clark Moores Middle School after its completion. Three years later, in 1977, the seventh grade students were also moved to Clark Moores Middle School. White Hall remained a kindergarten through sixth grade school until 1992 when Madison High School was renovated to make room for a new middle school to house the overflow of students at Clark Moores. Madison Middle School was opened in August of 1992 and the sixth grade students joined the seventh and eighth grade pupils at the new Madison Middle School.
In 1997 construction began to add a new gymnasium, library and four classrooms which included a new computer lab to White Hall Elementary. The construction was completed in August 1998.
