Advanced Coursework

Advanced Coursework Policy

Purpose:
The Advanced Coursework Policy ensures that all students are provided the opportunity to participate in a rigorous and academically challenging curriculum.

Grades 4-8
High School

Grades 4-8

Procedures:

Advanced coursework means educational programs or opportunities designed to challenge students with more rigorous content beyond the standard curriculum, including but not limited to:

Language Arts: Novel studies with above-grade-level texts; advanced writing prompts; next-level standards.
Mathematics: Curriculum compacting; next level standards.
Social Studies: Independent projects and investigations with real-world application; next-level standards.
Science: Research and inquiry projects and/or experiments; STEM challenges; next-level standards.

Annually, our schools will notify all students, parents, and guardians of the long-term benefits of student participation in advanced coursework and the advanced coursework opportunities available at the school. School counselors will advise students and their parents or guardians of the opportunity for advanced coursework at their school.

High School

Procedures:

Advanced coursework refers to educational programs or opportunities that challenge students with more rigorous content beyond the standard curriculum, including, but not limited to, Advanced Placement (AP) courses, honors courses, and dual credit programs. Our high schools offer a core curriculum of advanced placement courses. Our high schools will notify all students, parents, and guardians of the long-term benefits of participating in advanced coursework and the opportunities available at the school. School counselors will advise students and their parents or guardians about the opportunity for advanced coursework and encourage them to select the appropriate courses. Teachers will also encourage students to take challenging courses.
